LED TV's to take 16% of the global LCD market in 2010
According to the market research firm 'Displaybank', 26m LED TV's will be sold globally in 2010, representing 16% of the entire LCD market.
With world wild sales of just over 3m in 2009 this indicates a massive increase in demand for LCD TV's with the innovative 'Backlight' technology.
By 2013, Displaybank are predicting that LED TV's will comprise the majority of LCD's sold with sales of 130m representing 61.5% of the entire market.
There are currently two different types of LED lighting technology available to consumers, 'edge based' and 'local dimming'. As the name suggests, 'edge based' LED's are situated around the TV's frame rather than covering the whole pane. LED TV's using 'local dimming' light the entire rear of the screen, not just the perimeter, which allows various sections of the screen to be more precisely controlled.
Within the LED TV market itself it has become clear however that consumers are opting for the slimmer 'Edge' based implementation of the technology even if that means sacrificing picture quality. Edge based LED TV's accounted for around 80% of all LED units sold.
